Research results on the effectiveness of Tempocol published in gastroenterology

In a recent scientific study, MUMC+ researchers studied the effect of peppermint oil, demonstrating that peppermint oil capsules can help reduce IBS symptoms. The study was published in renowned journal Gastreoenterology.

In the Netherlands alone, over 1 million people suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). There are several treatment options and patients are often referred to a dietician, but there is little or no solid scientific evidence for the effectiveness of most medication that seeks to treat IBS. With Maastricht UMC’s study on Tempocol peppermint oil capsules, this is now changing.

The patient group given Tempocol peppermint oil capsules experienced statistically significant positive effects, including less abdominal pain, less physical discomfort, and less severe symptoms overall.
Gastroenterologist Dr Daniel Keszthelyi is cautiously optimistic: “Patients should not look at peppermint oil as a panacea for IBS. However, our study does show that Tempocol can provide relief.”

The PERSUADE study into the effectiveness of peppermint oil was partly funded by a grant of the ZonMW programme on the Effective Use of Medicines (GGG, Goed Gebruik Geneesmiddelen) and by Will Pharma. The objective of the GGG programme is to use existing medicines more effectively, more safely, and more efficiently.
